The Physical Education, Health, Drivers' Education Department

An Overview

The Physical Education Department at Rich Central provides a varied program of co-educational activities for all students, grades 9 through 12. The Freshman curriculum, while only one semester in length, (the Freshman class is split in half and alternates semesters with Health) provides a wide range of activities. These include basketball and volleyball as well as weight training, tumbling, soccer, Frisbee and flicker ball. The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes are involved in and elective program the allows most students to choose an activity each quarter. Activities include weight training (each quarter), tennis, football, softball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, pickle ball, as well as a unit in roller skating. All students are also involved in cardiovascular training two days of the week during the Fall and Spring semesters that specifically involves running and walking towards better health.

Rules, Regulations, Policies , and Procedures:

Uniforms

All students are required to have a Rich Central Physical Education uniform that can be purchased in the school bookstore. The uniform must be marked with the students last name, be kept reasonably clean, and not defaced by ripping or cutting, and must. Students must wear their OWN uniforms. The uniform shall include gym shoes (LACES TIED) and socks. Sweat pants and shirts are permitted for outside activities as needed. Students who do not have a uniform on a given day, may rent one at a charge of $1.00 per garment needed. Failure to dress in uniform will affect a student's grade and MAY lead to his being dropped from Physical Education for the semester.

Locker Room Rules

Each student is issued a RCHS lock and is responsible for its return at the year end check-out. (A $5.00 fee will be assessed for a lost lock.) Students may only use the locker room when instructors are present and may not use any equipment or areas without teacher supervision. Students may NOT bring equipment from home (basketballs, footballs, etc) to be used in the Physical Education areas.

Absences, Tardies, and Participation

Each student receives 5 points per day, per week based on their attendance, dress, and participation. The total points during the quarter and semester will determine the final grades for the student. An excused absence equals -5 points for the day while an unexcused absence equals
-10 points. Points can be made up by coming to a tutorial period. Excused absences can receive +5 points per absence in return for the tutorial make-up while an unexcused absences can be made up partially with the +5 points. Students are expected to be in the gym on time after the last passing bell/music. A tardy will be recorded and the Rich Central Tardy Policy will used. No make-up is available for tardies, not dressing, or lack of participation. Students who are ill or injured should report to the school nurse who may give them a medical excuse to study hall for the day.

Grading Guidelines

PARTICIPATION in Physical Education is our major goal. While skill in activities is important, it is our belief that general, daily participation will result in an increased level of fitness and an overall enjoyment of physical activity. It is, therefore, impossible to fail Physical Education if a student comes dressed to class daily, on time, and participates to the best of his/her ability.

Our grading scale is based on the following point system:

A= 93% of the total points
B= 85% of the total points
C= 78% of the total points
D= 70% of the total points
F= below 70% of the total points

If a student has at least 70% of the total points, only then can the level of skill, can affect the grade.
